Ascites Definition (what is ascites) Ascites is an abnormal accumulation of fluid (more than 25 milliliters of fluid) within the peritoneal cavity . It becomes due to a variety of abdominal diseases and other conditions or when the liver stops working properly. On the other hand, fluid fills the space between the abdominal lining and the internal organs due to improper functioning of the liver . Types of ascites- Based on the amount of protein found in the fluid. ascites is divided into 2 types- 1- T ransudative or exudative- (albumin measured in the blood). This is called the Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient or SAAG.
